Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs Nature Preserve
I am providing you with an insider’s view into the prospective Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs Nature Preserve: the most valuable, single land protection project in Ozaukee Washington Land Trust history.
We know that Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs has the potential to be one of the next great nature preserves in our region and we need your help to make it a reality.
- Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs Nature Preserve is one of the largest pieces of Lake Michigan land still undeveloped in our area and features three quarters of a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline.
- Our recent appraisal of the property showed a value of $7.8 million.
- The valuation is consistent with the high values we see for prime, development land along Lake Michigan. However, this valuation puts the project out of reach for OWLT’s conservation plans.
Here is the great news!
Knowing our purpose in buying the land was conservation, not profit, the owner of the land has generously negotiated with us to reach a reasonable purchase price. This resulted in a discounted purchase price of $5 million for the land, $2.8 under the appraised value!
Thanks to the continued generous support of the community, we have already secured $1 million of committed funds and are on our way to seeing the permanent conservation of this Lake Michigan gem. In order for this project to succeed, we have set a goal to raise $2 million in donations from our community.
Times are uncertain, but we know with certainty the window of opportunity to conserve the lands and waters of Ozaukee and Washington County is closing.
The time is now to take action. If you find yourself among the fortunate of us who are weathering this trying time with health and resources, then please consider making a gift that will allow us to Protect Today, Preserve Forever.
Your support will permanently conserve habitat along the lake that is critical for the wildlife that rely on the Lake Michigan migratory flyway.
Your support will promote open spaces and recreation that buoys Wisconsin’s $7.8 billion outdoor recreation industry.
Your support will make a lasting impact on future generations.
