Fellenz Woods

At approximately 162 acres, Fellenz Woods is the Land Trust’s largest owned property in Washington County. It encompasses nearly 1.5 miles of undeveloped Milwaukee River frontage. There is a 15 acre lowland forest containing hardwood and conifer swamp elements on the southern edge of the site. Numerous natural springs contribute water to the Milwaukee River and keep the area saturated year around. OWLT volunteers have planted about 60 acres with native grasses and flowers. A 50 acre virgin floodplain forest provides an excellent example of how the area looked prior to European settlement. OWLT staff and volunteers continue to maintain and enhance the native grassland planting and restore the remaining open areas to native hardwood forest. This process involves massive tree planting and the concurrent removal of aggressive invasive species. The forest is a valuable wildlife habitat for amphibians, forest interior birds, and waterfowl. Additionally, one of only 12 known blue heron rookeries in South Eastern Wisconsin exist in Fellenz Woods. The long term goal for the site includes not only the forest planting and invasive species removal but building kiosks and signage to enhance the visitor experience
